Across organizations timely information provides the cornerstone of sound business decision making. Without it business leaders are left with gut, intuition, prior experiences and little else. At the core of enterprise information and essential business processes often lies the development and maintenance of master data surrounding products, customers, and vendors. Unfortunately, despite understanding the criticality of “getting it right”, many organizations today lack the knowledge, resources or both to determine one single version of the truth about their master data. Over time this problem is compounded by data explosion as new data is “born” today at unparalleled rates across organizations. The proliferation of data with new systems, new users and new business rules causes data to grow, transform and even become obsolete with the passage of time. Not surprisingly when the need arises for consolidated or aggregated views of key data, the answer is often either “we don’t know” or “I can get you that, but it will take some time.” Neither of which is a good response to a business leader in the information age.
